长垣，西周时属卫国。春秋时期，卫国于长垣之地同时置蒲邑（今长垣县城）、匡邑。战国时期，卫之匡邑、蒲邑，被魏国兼并。此地在当时有一道长墙，或曰防垣。此防垣或用于防水，或用于防兵，此时已有“长垣”之名。根据杨宽所著的《战国史》载：“魏在沿黄河地区还有圆钱（无郭）流通，铸造的城市主要有共、垣、长垣（今河南省长垣县东北）等城。当时铸钱多用于地名，可见当时的防垣很长，故称长垣，而首垣则为防垣之首，长垣名由此而来。”
